The Book of the Month in January will be one of our favourite winter tales ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson.

Every month we will provide you with fun activities which link into our early years foundation stage which helps to develop the children’s learning through reading! So please do join us at home and participate in activities you can do at home together as a family. We would love to see what you get up to so don’t forget to send us photos of the children doing the activities or you can tag us on social media @MonkeyMoos.

The first thing to do: Read the story together, of course! How can you do this at home? You can find the book on Amazon- it is £5.99, or you could borrow it from your local library and then swap it for next months ‘MonkeyMoos Book of the Month’ or you can find the story being read online for free.

The ‘Stick Man’ for those of you who do not know, is all about a Stick Man who gets lost and can’t find his way back to the family tree!! There is lots of rhyming involved in the story and throughout the story, he repeats, “I’m Stickman, I’m Stickman, I’m Stickman, that’s me! And I long to go home to the family tree!” You can all get involved by chanting this part out and also by guessing which word may come next- what rhymes with stick? Trick of course!

Does your child enjoy going for winter walks? If the answer is yes! You could go on a stick hunt! Collecting the stick family along the way! Once you have you stick family, how about you make them come to life? All you will need is some glue, googly eyes and also some leaves (for their hair). This is a great activity whatever the ages of your little ones! You could then create a scene using the stick family, acting it out with children is a great way of extending their knowledge of the story and improving their literacy skills as well as their language skills.
